Chloride travels with sodium and helps keep the body's water and acid balance where it should be. The level shifts with vomiting, loose motions, drips given in hospital and certain medicines, so it is usually measured with the other electrolytes rather than by itself. Results are reported in milliequivalents per litre.

Doctors order it for prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, dehydration, kidney disease, unexplained weakness or confusion, and monitoring of patients on intravenous fluids or diuretics.
