Antinuclear antibodies are antibodies the immune system has made against parts of the body's own cell nuclei. In the immunofluorescence method the serum is placed on cultured cells and viewed under a fluorescence microscope, and the report gives both the strength of the glow and its pattern. The pattern narrows down which autoimmune condition is in question.
