HBs Ag is a piece of the outer coat of the hepatitis B virus. When it turns up in blood, the virus itself is present, either from a recent infection or one carried for a long time. It is among the standard checks done before surgery, before blood donation and in pregnancy.

Doctors order it for jaundice, raised liver enzymes, screening before an operation, antenatal checks and testing of family contacts.
