The count covers the haemoglobin, the red cells and their packed volume, the platelets and the white cells with their different types, and a technologist also examines the cells under the microscope. The pattern in those numbers points the doctor towards a bacterial infection, a viral illness, dengue or anaemia. The sedimentation rate adds a general measure of inflammation in the body.
Doctors order it for fever lasting more than two or three days, for chills with body ache, and for a fever that settles and then returns.
