NS1 turns up from about the first day of fever and can usually be found for roughly the first week, before the body has made antibodies. Finding it points to a dengue infection going on at that moment. Not finding it later in the illness does not settle the matter, and antibody testing suits that stage better.
Doctors order it for fever with body ache, headache or rash during the dengue season, particularly in the first few days.
