After a throat infection with group A streptococcus, the body makes antibodies against a toxin the bacterium releases, called streptolysin O. Measuring how much of that antibody is present is evidence of a streptococcal infection in the recent past rather than one going on at the moment. Levels climb over some weeks and then fall away slowly.

Doctors order it for joint pains following a sore throat, suspected rheumatic fever, and kidney inflammation coming on some weeks after a throat or skin infection.
