When a screening ANA comes back positive, this profile works out which particular nuclear antigens the antibodies are aimed at. The serum is run against a strip carrying a panel of purified antigens, and every band that develops names one antibody. Different combinations of bands point towards different connective tissue disorders.
Doctors order it for a positive ANA that needs sorting out, and for suspected lupus, Sjogren's syndrome, scleroderma or mixed connective tissue disease.
