Both types of the virus are looked for in the same sample. What is picked up is the body's response to the virus, so a test done very soon after a possible exposure may show nothing yet and is repeated after some weeks. A reactive result is always confirmed by further testing.
Doctors order it for screening before an operation, in pregnancy, after a needle-stick or other exposure, and for long fever or weight loss without a cause.
