ELISA stands for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, a laboratory method run on an analyser rather than a bedside card. It picks up smaller quantities of antibody and produces a measured value on a printed report. A reactive result goes on for confirmation by a second method.

Doctors order it for documenting HIV status, for pre-employment and pre-operative requirements, and for antenatal screening.
