Rheumatoid factor is an antibody that some people's immune systems make against their own tissue. The blood level is reported as a number, which the doctor reads along with the joint examination and other tests. The same antibody turns up in certain other conditions and in a small number of healthy people, more often as age increases.

Doctors order it for joint pain and morning stiffness lasting several weeks, swelling of the small joints of the hands and feet, and review of known rheumatoid arthritis.
