The immune system normally makes antibodies against infections. Rheumatoid factor is one aimed at the body's own antibodies, and it is found in most, though not all, people with rheumatoid arthritis. The laboratory reports it as a value in international units, which the doctor weighs against your symptoms and examination.

Doctors order it for persistent pain and swelling in several joints, stiffness that is worst on waking, and to help sort out which kind of arthritis is present.
