A thin swab is passed to the back of the nose and along the throat to pick up cells and secretions. In the laboratory any viral RNA present is copied over and over until there is enough to detect, which is why the method finds even small quantities. The report says whether the virus is present, and nothing about how ill a person is.

Doctors order it for fever, cough, sore throat or loss of smell, after contact with a confirmed case, and where a documented result is asked for before admission, surgery or travel.
