A sample of blood is mixed with proteins found only in the tuberculosis bacterium. If you have been infected at some point, certain white cells recognise those proteins and release a chemical messenger called interferon-gamma, which the laboratory then measures. Unlike the older skin test, a BCG vaccination does not disturb the result.

Doctors order it for suspected latent tuberculosis, close contacts of a TB patient, and screening before starting medicines that lower immunity.
