Troponin I sits inside the muscle fibres of the heart and almost nowhere else in the body. When a part of the heart muscle is starved of blood and injured, this protein leaks out and can be picked up in a blood sample within a few hours. This version reports whether troponin is present above the cut-off level.

Doctors order it for chest pain, breathlessness or sweating that may be coming from the heart, and to check the heart muscle after an abnormal ECG.
