What it showsఈ స్కాన్ దేని కోసం
HRCT means high-resolution CT. It takes very thin slices through the lungs and shows the fine structure of the lung tissue — detail a plain chest X-ray simply cannot resolve.
Doctors order it for a cough that has lasted weeks, unexplained breathlessness, suspected interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, or when a chest X-ray shows something that needs a closer look.
You will be asked to take a breath in and hold it for a few seconds while the scanner runs.

- The breath-hold is practised before we scan
- HRCT slices are thin, so a breath taken during the scan blurs the exact lung detail the scan is meant to show. You are taken through the breath-hold on the table first, and the scan is started only when you can hold it steadily for the few seconds needed.
- Prone slices when the back of the lung looks dense
- Lying on your back, the rear of the lower lungs settles under its own weight and can look like early scarring. When we see that, a few slices are repeated with you lying face down. Density that clears in that position was only the weight of the lung; anything still there is reported as a finding.
- Slices taken after breathing out as well
- Small airway disease can look normal on the usual breathe-in images. A set taken after you breathe out shows the patches of lung that fail to empty. That is how air trapping is caught when the inspiratory images read as clear.
- A chest X-ray usually comes first
- For a plain cough or fever, a chest X-ray answers the question in about five minutes. HRCT is for what the plain film cannot show, such as interstitial disease and bronchiectasis. If you arrive asking for HRCT with no film, we will say so.
- ₹5,000 covers the scan and the report
- That is the rate on the public price list, and it does not go up if prone or expiratory slices are needed to settle the question. The reporting is part of that figure and is not billed as a separate line.
