What it showsఈ స్కాన్ దేని కోసం
A chest X-ray takes a few seconds and shows the lungs, the outline of the heart, the ribs and the diaphragm.
Doctors order it for a cough that will not settle, breathlessness, chest pain, fever with chest signs, before surgery, and for many employment and visa checks.
Tell the radiographer if you are pregnant or might be. X-rays use a small dose of radiation, and in pregnancy your doctor will usually choose a scan that does not.

- The view is decided before the film is taken
- A PA film, taken standing with the chest against the plate, gives a true heart size. An AP film, taken sitting or lying down, magnifies the heart and can suggest an enlargement that is not there. Which view you get depends on what your doctor has written, so we read the requisition before positioning you.
- We ask about pregnancy before the exposure
- Every woman of child-bearing age is asked about her last period before she goes behind the plate. If pregnancy is possible we hold the film and send you back to the referring doctor, who decides whether the X-ray is still needed or whether another test will do.
- Digital, so a poor film is caught at once
- The image comes up on screen while you are still standing at the plate. If you moved, or your shoulder blades sit over the lung fields, it is retaken there and then. No film leaves the room with a note on it saying the quality was poor.
- When the plain film is not enough
- A chest X-ray misses early interstitial disease and mild bronchiectasis. When a plain film points that way, your doctor may ask for an HRCT chest. Your earlier film stays in our records, so the two can be compared side by side.
- ₹400, and 78 views on the same sheet
- A chest PA is ₹400. If your doctor asks instead for a lateral or an apical lordotic view, that rate is on the same sheet. We do 78 X-ray views in all and every one of them is on the public price list.
