A 2D echo is an ultrasound of the heart. It shows the chambers, the valves opening and closing, and how strongly the heart muscle squeezes — reported as the ejection fraction.
Doctors order it for breathlessness, swelling of the feet, a murmur heard on examination, palpitations, and to follow up known heart disease.
Nothing is injected and nothing hurts. You lie on your left side while a probe with gel is moved across your chest.

- Twenty minutes, because it is done live
- The images are taken while you lie on your left side, with the probe finding windows between the ribs, and every measurement is made at that moment. Nothing is stored to be measured again later, the way a blood sample can be re-run from the tube. That is why it takes about 20 minutes.
- No injection and no radiation
- Gel and a probe on the chest wall, nothing else. Nothing is injected and no X-rays are involved, so there is no fasting beforehand and nothing to recover from after. You can go back to work from here, and the study can be repeated as often as your doctor wants.
- The ejection fraction is written as a figure
- Chamber sizes, valve movement and the ejection fraction go into the report as measurements. A study done six months later can then be set against this one instead of being described afresh. Heart failure medicine doses are usually decided on that number.
- Breathlessness is not always the heart
- Swollen ankles and breathlessness also come from kidney disease, from anaemia and from lung problems. If the echo reads normal, the next steps are often a kidney function test and a haemoglobin, both run here, and our nephrologist sees patients in this building.
- ₹1600, and the usual three come to ₹2250
