Cholesterol and triglycerides are the fats carried in your blood. Too much of the wrong kind narrows the arteries over years, which is why doctors check them well before anything feels wrong.
Fast for 9 to 12 hours before the test — an overnight gap, water only.

- The fasting window is 9 to 12 hours
- Triglycerides are the value that changes with food, and cholesterol moves much less. Plain water is fine, tea or coffee with milk and sugar is not, and alcohol the previous evening can hold triglycerides up for a day. If you ate at 11pm and came at 7am, that is eight hours, so tell the counter and we will note it.
- We calculate LDL rather than measure it
- Like most labs, we work LDL out from the other values instead of measuring it directly. A triglyceride raised by a non fasting sample therefore drags your LDL figure down with it. Above roughly 400 mg/dL the calculation stops holding, and we say that on the report instead of printing a number.
- A recent fever or surgery lowers cholesterol
- After an infection, an operation or a cardiac event, cholesterol and LDL sit well below a person's usual level for several weeks. If you have been unwell in the last month, waiting is usually better than starting or stopping a tablet on a number that is lower than your own normal.
- ECG and echo are done in this building
- A high LDL raises a question about the heart, and the usual next steps are a blood pressure check, an ECG and sometimes a 2D echo. The ECG and the echo are both done here and read by our consultants, so you are not taking a paper report to a second address.
- ₹500, and ₹500 again for the recheck
- A lipid profile is usually repeated after three months of diet change or a new tablet. The recheck is priced the same, and nothing is added for the report on WhatsApp. The price list is public.
