About this test
What this test checksఈ పరీక్ష దేని కోసం
This measures the glucose in your blood after you have not eaten for about eight hours. It is the standard first test for diabetes.
Come in the morning without breakfast. Water is fine, and you should keep taking your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise. Tea or coffee with sugar breaks the fast.

- The grey tube is doing real work
- Blood cells keep consuming glucose after the sample is drawn, so a tube left standing loses roughly 5 to 7 per cent of its glucose every hour and reads lower than your real fasting sugar. The grey cap means sodium fluoride, which stops that, and that is what a fasting sugar is drawn into here.
- A short draw gets taken again
- A grey tube holds a fixed quantity of fluoride and oxalate meant for a set volume of blood. Fill it halfway and the ratio changes, and the glucose reads off. If the vein gives less than the tube needs, we draw again rather than report a number off a half-filled tube.
- We ask what you have had since last night
- Tea with sugar at six in the morning, or a biscuit on the way, is enough to lift a fasting value into the band that gets called prediabetes. Eight hours without food is what the test assumes. We ask before drawing, and if the fast is broken we would rather you come another morning.
- One high fasting value is not a diagnosis
- A fasting sugar above the range is normally repeated on a second day, or read along with a post prandial sample or an HbA1c. The staff at the counter will tell you that when the report is handed over, so you know what usually comes next.
