What this test checksఈ పరీక్ష దేని కోసం
A single sugar reading tells you about one morning. HbA1c tells you about the last two to three months, because it measures how much sugar has attached to your red blood cells over their lifetime.
No fasting needed, and you can come at any time of day. Doctors use it to diagnose diabetes and to check whether treatment is working.

- A low haemoglobin bends the HbA1c
- Iron deficiency anaemia pushes the value up. Recent blood loss, haemolysis or a haemoglobin variant pushes it down. If your haemoglobin is low the number has to be read in that light, which is why a complete blood count from the same draw is worth doing.
- No fasting, and no separate visit
- HbA1c goes into a lavender EDTA tube and does not depend on when you last ate. It can be drawn whenever you are here, including alongside a sugar or a kidney profile from the same prick. You do not have to keep a morning free for it.
- It covers the last two to three months
- Glucose attaches to haemoglobin over the life of the red cell, so the value is an average of roughly the last 8 to 12 weeks, weighted towards the recent few. Eating carefully for the two days before the test will not move it, which is why doctors ask for this one.
- We will say when a repeat is too soon
- Red cells live about 120 days, so an HbA1c repeated at four or six weeks usually says what the last one said. Unless your doctor has changed the treatment and wants an early look, about three months apart is the gap at which the number actually shifts.
