Your kidneys filter waste out of the blood. When they slow down, that waste builds up — and creatinine and urea are the two numbers that show it first.
Commonly ordered alongside diabetes and blood pressure checks, and before starting certain medicines. Our consultant nephrologist sees patients at the clinic for kidney care and dialysis.

- Drink water before a KFT
- Urea rises when you are dry, and people who fast overnight often arrive dehydrated. That is why the urea to creatinine ratio is read together rather than urea alone. Water is allowed before a KFT, and drinking it makes the result easier to interpret.
- A rise from 0.8 to 1.2 still matters
- Creatinine depends on muscle mass, so a thin elderly patient can lose real kidney function while the number still sits inside the printed range. Your earlier values stay on file here, and that rise is treated as a finding even when both readings are in range.
- Uric acid moves with food and medicines
- A mutton or seafood dinner the previous night lifts uric acid, and so do diuretics, low dose aspirin and a recent fast. Tell us your medicines at the counter, because one high reading on a bad day is often enough for someone to be started on gout treatment.
