A quick, painless test that picks up urinary infection, protein leaking from the kidneys, and sugar the kidneys could not hold back.
Ask at the counter for a sterile container. The first urine of the morning gives the clearest result, and a mid-stream sample — start passing, then collect — avoids contamination.

- A sterile container and the mid-stream method
- The first part of the stream washes down cells from the skin, and those get reported as pus cells that were never in the bladder. We hand over a sterile container and explain that you pass a little into the toilet first, then collect. We cannot report urine brought in a water bottle.
- Two hours is when the sample starts to fail
- Cells break down and casts dissolve at room temperature, roughly within two hours, so a real kidney finding can be gone before anyone looks at it. Your sample is examined the same day in this building, with the deposit spun down and read under the microscope, not off a dipstick alone.
- The first morning sample is the useful one
- Overnight urine is concentrated, so protein, casts and cells are present in amounts that show up. A sample passed after two glasses of water is dilute and can read normal even when something is wrong. Collect the first morning one and bring it in.
- If pus cells turn up, the culture can follow
- A routine finding of pus cells says there is probably an infection, but not which organism or which antibiotic will work on it. Since your sample is already in a sterile container here, it can be put up for urine culture the same day instead of calling you back for a fresh one.

- The routine examination is Rs 200. Culture, only if the routine points that way, is Rs 600. Nothing extra for the report or for sending it to your WhatsApp once it is signed, and both figures are on the public price list.
