The arterial part follows the blood going down each leg and shows narrowing or blockage in the vessels. The venous part follows the blood coming back up and looks for clots and for valves that are leaking. Both legs are done from the groin to the ankle, so the study takes a fair amount of time and gentle pressure is applied with the probe at several points.

Doctors order it for pain in the calves on walking, cold or discolored feet, non-healing ulcers, swelling of the legs, varicose veins, and in diabetes where circulation is a concern.
