Sound waves follow the blood returning from each leg towards the heart. The person scanning presses gently along the vein at intervals to see whether it flattens as it should, since a vein with a clot inside will not. The valves are also tested to see if blood is falling backwards, which is what causes varicose veins.

Doctors order it for swelling or pain in both legs, suspected deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, and skin changes or ulcers around the ankles.
