The first part covers the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and the bladder. You are then asked to go and pass urine, and the bladder is scanned again straight away to measure what is still left inside — this leftover amount is the post-void residual. It tells the doctor how completely the bladder is emptying.
Doctors order it for difficulty passing urine, a weak stream, frequent urination at night, an enlarged prostate, repeated urinary infections, and abdominal pain.
