The doctor reads the joint spaces, the surfaces of the bone at each joint, and in children the growth areas near the ends of the bones. Comparing left with right often makes a subtle change easier to notice.

Doctors order it for joint pain and stiffness in the fingers, suspected arthritis, injury to the hand, and in children to assess bone age.
