The foot is filmed from above with the sole resting on the plate, which spreads out the small bones of the midfoot and the toes. Both feet in one film make it easier to see a difference between the two sides. It shows bone outlines and joint spaces, though it does not show the arch the way a side view does.

Doctors order it for pain in the forefoot, deformity of the toes, joint pain of the small joints, or a suspected small fracture.
