The forearm has two long bones, the radius and the ulna, running between the elbow and the wrist. AP means the picture is taken front-to-back and LAT means it is taken from the side, and the two together let the doctor see a break or a bend from more than one direction. The elbow and wrist joints usually come into the edges of the film.

Doctors order it for a fall on an outstretched hand, pain or deformity after injury, swelling that will not settle, or to check a healing fracture.
