The adenoids are a small patch of tissue sitting behind the nose where it opens into the throat. This film is taken from the side with soft tissue settings, so the tissue itself shows up along with the air passage behind it, and the doctor can see how much of the passage the tissue is taking up. It is a common film in children.

Doctors order it for a child who breathes through the mouth, snores at night, has a blocked nose that does not clear, or has repeated ear trouble.
