Each ankle is filmed twice, once front-to-back and once from the side, and doing both sides lets one be read against the other. The pictures cover the lower ends of the shin bones, the talus that sits between them, and the back of the heel. Alignment of the joint space is as much part of the reading as the bone itself.

Doctors order it for a twisted ankle, pain on walking, swelling around the joint, or long-standing arthritis in both ankles.
