The film covers the lower dorsal vertebrae and the lumbar ones below them, the stretch of spine that carries most of the body's weight. The front view shows whether the bones sit in line and how evenly they are spaced. The side view shows the curve, the height of each vertebra, and any one that has collapsed or slipped forward on the one below.

Doctors order it for back pain after a fall, pain running down into the leg, suspected compression fracture in older patients, and stiffness that has gone on for months.
