The hand is a stack of small bones, and the front-to-back picture separates the finger bones and the palm bones so each can be seen on its own. The side picture shows how the bones line up front to back, which is how a displaced or angled break becomes obvious. Both films take in the wrist end of the hand as well.
Doctors order it for injury to a finger or the palm, suspected fracture or dislocation, swelling of the small joints, and pain that has carried on after a knock.
