This is the side view on its own, usually added to a film already taken from the front or asked for on its own follow-up. Looking from the side shows the neck of the thigh bone where it enters the socket and reveals any backward tilt or shift that a front picture hides. It is a quick film and needs the leg to be positioned in a particular way.

Doctors order it for a follow-up on a known hip fracture, to check the position of a hip after treatment, and to clarify a finding seen on an earlier film.
