Taken from the side with the knee slightly bent, this view lines up the two rounded ends of the thigh bone one behind the other. It gives the clearest look at the kneecap, at where it sits relative to the joint, and at the space behind the knee where fluid gathers after an injury. It is often asked for on its own as a follow-up.

Doctors order it for kneecap pain, suspected fluid in the joint, follow-up of a treated fracture, and clarification of something seen on an earlier film.
