For this view the knee is bent and the beam is sent along the line of the kneecap, so it appears end-on rather than as a shadow over the joint. That shows the shallow groove in the thigh bone the kneecap slides in and whether it is riding centred, tilted or off to one side. The undersurface of the kneecap is also visible, which the standard views cannot show.
