The level also goes up in endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic infection, liver disease, during periods and in pregnancy, which is why it is never used by itself to diagnose anything. Most of its value lies in following the same person's figure over time while they are under treatment or being watched.

Doctors order it for investigating an ovarian mass alongside a scan, and for monitoring women treated for ovarian cancer.
