As with the basic fever panel, the haemoglobin, the platelets, the white cells and their types are counted and the cells are looked at under the microscope, with the sedimentation rate measured alongside. This wider version is usually asked for when the fever has lasted longer than a few days. The results are read as a group rather than one value at a time.
Doctors order it for fever that has not settled with initial treatment, for fever with body ache and weakness, and during seasons when dengue and typhoid are common.
