Besides the iron in circulation it measures the protein that ferries iron through the blood and the reserve the body keeps tucked away in the liver and marrow. Read together these separate a genuine iron shortage from anaemia arising some other way, and they can also show iron building up to excess. One blood sample covers the whole group.
Doctors order it for anaemia that needs explaining, long-standing tiredness, heavy menstrual loss and before or during iron treatment.
