Iron comes from what you eat and goes into making haemoglobin, the substance in red cells that carries oxygen around the body. The level swings through the day and climbs for several hours after an iron tablet or an iron-rich meal, so a single figure is read alongside your symptoms and the rest of the blood count.

Doctors order it for tiredness, suspected anaemia, heavy periods, poor appetite in children and to follow up iron treatment.
