AST, also written SGOT, sits inside cells of the liver, heart and skeletal muscle and does its work there. When those cells are injured or inflamed, the enzyme spills into the bloodstream and the level rises. Because muscle contains it too, the figure is read alongside ALT and the rest of the liver panel rather than on its own.

Doctors order it for jaundice, suspected hepatitis, alcohol related liver disease, fatty liver, and monitoring of medicines that can affect the liver.
