This test adds up all the cholesterol carried in the blood, in every form, and gives one figure. It is usually read alongside the other fats in a lipid profile.

Doctors order it for routine heart risk assessment, high blood pressure or diabetes, a family history of heart disease, and follow-up of cholesterol-lowering treatment.
