SGPT and ALT are two names for the same enzyme, which sits mostly inside liver cells. When those cells are inflamed or injured, some of the enzyme escapes into the bloodstream, so the level in a blood sample reflects how the liver is faring. It is done on a plain blood sample drawn from a vein.

Doctors order it for jaundice, suspected hepatitis, alcohol-related liver trouble, and to keep an eye on the liver in people on long-term medication.
