Uric acid comes from the ordinary breakdown of cells and also from certain foods and drinks. When the level stays high it can settle as crystals inside a joint, and it can form stones in the kidney. A small blood sample is all that is needed.
Doctors order it for a painful swollen joint, for gout already under treatment, for kidney stones, and before starting certain medicines.
