The visual and microscopic part covers parasites, pus cells and undigested food. The occult blood part uses a chemical reaction that picks up traces of blood far too small to change the colour of the stool, which may be coming from anywhere along the digestive tract, from the oesophagus down to the rectum.

Doctors order it for anaemia with no obvious cause, persistent stomach pain, a change in bowel habit, and screening in older adults.
