Colour, consistency and any mucus are noted first, then a small quantity is examined under the microscope. The laboratory looks for the eggs and cysts of worms and amoebae, pus cells that point to inflammation of the bowel, red cells, and food that has passed through undigested.

Doctors order it for loose motions, griping abdominal pain, and suspected worm or amoebic infection.
