The sample is spread on culture plates that encourage gut organisms such as salmonella and shigella to grow, and kept warm overnight. Anything that grows is identified and then exposed to a panel of antibiotics to see which of them halt it. The ordinary bacteria that live in everybody's intestine are not reported as a cause.
Doctors order it for diarrhoea lasting several days, blood or mucus in the stool, and suspected food poisoning or typhoid.
