Bence Jones protein is a fragment of an antibody, the light chain, made in excess by an abnormal group of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Being small, it slips through the kidney filter into the urine, where ordinary protein tests often miss it. The laboratory looks for it specifically, by running the urine sample on electrophoresis.
Doctors order it for suspected multiple myeloma, unexplained bone pain with anaemia, a high total protein in blood, and kidney impairment of unclear cause.
