Bile is made by the liver and normally drains into the intestine. When the liver is inflamed or the bile duct is blocked, bile substances build up in the blood and pass out through the kidneys, which is what darkens the urine. Both are looked for in a plain urine sample.
Doctors order it for yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, itching, or a suspected liver or gall bladder problem.
