Ketones are produced when the body burns fat instead of sugar for energy. That happens during long gaps without food, during repeated vomiting, and in diabetes when insulin is falling short. A strip dipped in the urine sample changes colour when ketones are present.
Doctors order it for poorly controlled diabetes, vomiting with stomach pain, and drowsiness or heavy breathing in a known diabetic.
