hCG appears in the urine soon after a pregnancy begins and its level climbs over the early weeks. The test gives a positive or negative answer rather than a number. When a precise figure is wanted, or when the answer is needed very early, a blood test is used instead.
Doctors order it for a missed period, to confirm a suspected pregnancy, and before certain scans or medicines.
